Autumn Winter 21 fabrics

Fadwa discusses the fabrics used in the Autumn Winter Modern Nostalgia collection.

"I spent lots of time sourcing fabrics from different mills in different countries. For every collection there is always an exclusive baruni fabric that we design and we have one of the mills produce for us.

For Autumn Winter 21 our exclusive fabric is a check jacquard fabric mixed with silver and gold lurex. This fabric is stiff and very suitable for event maxi dresses. I am very pleased with the way this fabric drapes and retains the shape without crushing. These dresses are good for long events when other fabrics may look crushed after a few hours while at the same time, they remain comfortable to wear.

We have also used a luxurious jersey knitted fabric with lurex. Because of its stretchable nature the midi and maxi dresses we made from this fabric are very easy to wear. It’s also very easy to pack for travelling as it is very resistant to creasing.

Another great fabric I found for AW21 one that looks denim-like yet is very soft and has a double tone colour. This fabric has proven to be very popular within our USA market in presenting our samples to US buyers. It’s less formal and the garments are very suitable for chic office wear or a small gathering with friends.

For this collection we have also included a pleated fabric. I keep promising myself never to use pleated fabric again, as it’s difficult to cut and stitch, but forget my promise whenever I see one of these really attractive pleated fabrics. I guess because I like challenging myself and because I am always so pleased by how well the dresses turn out. We used it to make nice ruffles for a number of dresses as well as a beautiful cape – a must in every baruni fall collection.

Finally, for the 70s vibes, a metallic fabric is a must. This fabric played a big roll as a trim for some dresses and for as much as for the whole garment that made a big wow statement. Though it is metallic it drapes very well and I very much enjoyed working with it.

I have always found that fabric selection is the foundation of a great collection, whether I am making maxi-dresses, shirt dresses or more casual pieces, the fabric needs to complement the design and emphasize the design concept I have in mind for the piece. Modern Nostalgia was a great platform for selecting special fabrics bringing out the essence of seventies' freedom and style.
